Drive Test Scarborough — What to Expect on Your G2 Test Day

G2 Test Driving Lessons Toronto

So your G2 test is coming up, and you’ve booked it at the DriveTest centre in Scarborough—first, good choice. Now let’s make sure you walk in prepared, confident, and ready to pass on your first attempt.

At DriveZee, we train students across Scarborough every week. Our certified instructors know these local roads, the test routes, and exactly what the examiners at this centre are looking for. This guide gives you everything we share with our own students before their G2 test day.

Quick Fact: The DriveTest centre serving Scarborough is located at 91 Rylander Blvd, Scarborough, ON M1B 5M5 (The Village of Abbey Lane Shopping Centre). Phone: 1-800-489-8450.

1. Where Is the DriveTest Centre in Scarborough?

The DriveTest Scarborough location — officially called the Toronto Port Union DriveTest Centre — is at:

91 Rylander Blvd, Unit #109A Scarborough, ON M1B 5M5

It sits inside the Village of Abbey Lane Shopping Centre near Kingston Road and Morningside Avenue. The area is well-served by TTC buses, and there’s ample parking if you’re coming by car — which you will be, since you need your own vehicle for the road test.

Pro tip: Arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment. Check-in takes time, and arriving flustered is the worst way to start a road test.

2. What Documents Do You Need to Bring?

Don’t get turned away at the door. Here’s what you must have with you:

  • Your valid Ontario G1 licence
  • The vehicle you plan to use for the test (must be roadworthy)
  • Proof of valid vehicle insurance and registration
  • Proof of payment (if not already paid online)
  • Your glasses or contacts if you need them to drive
⚠️ Important: The examiner can refuse to start your test if your vehicle has any issues — expired plates, broken lights, non-functioning signals, or no valid insurance. Do a full vehicle check the night before.

3. What Does the G2 Test Route Look Like in Scarborough?

The Toronto Port Union DriveTest centre covers a mix of residential streets and busier arterial roads near Kingston Road and the Highway 401 corridor. Your specific route is determined by the examiner on the day, but most routes share common elements.

Typical road types you’ll drive through:

  • Residential streets with 40–50 km/h speed limits and four-way stops
  • Arterial roads like Kingston Road with multi-lane traffic and traffic lights
  • School zones require extra caution and reduced speed
  • Intersections with pedestrian crosswalks — very common in this area
  • Parking areas for parallel parking and three-point turn manoeuvres
️ Local Knowledge: The Scarborough test area includes roads around Morningside Ave, Sheppard Ave East, Lawrence Ave East, and residential pockets off Kingston Rd. Our DriveZee instructors practise these exact routes with students before test day.

Note: The G2 test does NOT include highway driving. That comes at the G road test level. So no Highway 401 for the G2 — but the surrounding roads are still busy enough to require full attention.

4. What Does the Examiner Test You On?

Your G2 examiner uses a standardized MTO score sheet divided into 7 sections. Here’s what they’re watching:

SectionWhat the Examiner Checks
StartSafely leaving your parking space, mirrors adjusted, seatbelt on
BackingReversing in a straight line, executing a 3-point turn (turnabout)
Driving AlongSpeed control, lane choice, following distance, frequent mirror checks
IntersectionsObeying signals, complete stops, right-of-way, pedestrian awareness
TurnsProper signalling, speed, steering, lane position on left and right turns
Roadside StopSafely pulling over to the curb and rejoining traffic
ParkingParallel parking, reverse parking — done smoothly and accurately

Examiners now increasingly use tablets for digital scoring. The criteria are identical to the traditional sheet — they’re watching your habits, your awareness, and whether you’d be safe driving alone.

5. What Are the Most Common Reasons for Failing in Scarborough?

Based on what our DriveZee instructors see after test days, these are the mistakes that trip students up most often at the Scarborough centre:

Automatic fail errors (one of these ends your test immediately):

  • Running a stop sign or red light
  • Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk
  • Driving dangerously or causing a near-collision
  • Speeding significantly over the posted limit

Common minor errors that stack up and cause failure:

  • Rolling stops — not coming to a full stop at stop signs
  • Skipping blind spot/shoulder checks on lane changes and turns
  • Not signalling early enough — signal at least 30 metres before turning
  • Forgetting to check mirrors every 5–10 seconds while driving along
  • Poor parallel parking — touching the curb or taking too many attempts
  • Inconsistent speed — going too slow in 50 km/h zones or too fast near school zones
DriveZee Instructor Tip: Exaggerate your head movements when checking mirrors and blind spots. The examiner sitting beside you needs to see that you’re checking clearly — small eye movements don’t register. Turn your head visibly.

6. Minor vs. Major Errors — What’s the Difference?

Not every mistake means instant failure. Here’s how to think about it:

Minor errors — things like stopping a little past the line, taking a corner slightly wide, or braking a touch harder than needed. These get marked on your sheet but don’t automatically fail you. A few of these are fine if your overall driving is safe.

Major errors — anything that endangers you, another driver, a cyclist, or a pedestrian. One major error and the test is over immediately.

The examiner is essentially asking one question: ‘Would I feel safe if this person drove alone tomorrow?’ Drive safely, stay calm, and small slip-ups won’t cost you the test.

7. Scarborough-Specific Things to Practise Before Your Test

Because the Scarborough test routes include specific road conditions, here’s what to focus your practice sessions on:

  • Four-way stops — very common in the residential pockets near Kingston Rd. Know the right-of-way rules cold.
  • Left turns across traffic — the roads around Morningside and Sheppard have busy intersections. Practice waiting patiently for a clear gap.
  • Pedestrian crosswalks — the test area has school zones and marked crosswalks. Always yield.
  • Multi-lane roads — Kingston Road has multiple lanes. Practice smooth lane changes with full signal and shoulder checks.
  • Parallel parking — most G2 tests in this centre include a parallel park. Get comfortable with it in the side streets near the test centre.
  • Construction zones — Toronto roads are always under construction. Be prepared to slow down and follow temporary signage.
Practice Where It Counts: DriveZee instructors based in Scarborough take students through the actual roads near the test centre during lessons. If you want to feel familiar with the route before test day, book a session with us. We’ll make sure you’ve driven these streets before the examiner is in your car.

8. Day-of Timeline: What Happens Step by Step

Here’s what to expect from the moment you arrive to the moment you get your result:

  1. Arrive 30 minutes early — park and get settled. Take a few deep breaths.
  2. Check in at the front desk — show your G1 licence and any required documents.
  3. Meet your examiner — they’ll introduce themselves, explain how directions are given, and check your vehicle.
  4. Pre-drive check — adjust your mirrors, seat, and seatbelt before moving.
  5. The road test begins — approximately 20–30 minutes on Scarborough roads.
  6. Return to DriveTest — the examiner will review your score sheet with you.
  7. Result — pass or fail, you’ll get a copy of the score sheet with notes on each section.

9. Should You Use Your Own Car or a Driving School Car?

You have two options for the test vehicle: your own car or a rental from a driving school like DriveZee. There’s a real advantage to using a driving school car:

  • You arrive with an instructor who can warm you up and settle your nerves beforehand
  • Examiners are generally more at ease when there’s a dual-brake system in the car
  • The car is pre-checked, insured, and meets all DriveTest requirements — no last-minute surprises
  • You can do a short practice run near the test centre right before the test begins

DriveZee offers road test car rental with instructor support in Scarborough. If you don’t have access to a vehicle — or you just want that extra edge on test day — it’s one of the most effective things you can do.

10. What If You Fail?

It happens. Roughly 40–50% of drivers don’t pass their G2 on the first attempt. Failing is not the end — it’s information.

  • You must wait at least 10 days before rebooking
  • Your G1 licence must still be valid when you rebook
  • You’ll receive a score sheet explaining exactly where you lost marks — use it
  • One targeted session with a DriveZee instructor focused on your weak points can make all the difference the second time
✅ Pass On Your Next AttemptMany of our students who fail their first G2 test come to DriveZee for a focused lesson before retaking. With the score sheet in hand, we know exactly what to work on — and the pass rate on the retest is significantly higher.
